About the Film

This powerful debut feature film by Glenda Rome invites us to reimagine our connection to place, guided by Kenneth White’s vision, grounded in the poetry of the land itself.

Though internationally acclaimed—particularly in French-speaking regions—White remains surprisingly under-recognised in his native Scotland. This film seeks to explore, honour, and reawaken his legacy.

Structured like a lyrical poem, the film follows six individuals whose creative lives have been touched by geopoetics. Their reflections, practices, and paths bring White’s philosophy to life—blurring the lines between disciplines to offer a deeper, more intuitive relationship with the world around us.

Following White’s death, during the film’s production, its trajectory changed. His presence is conjured through archival footage, recordings of his poetry, and the landscapes he loved—while his absence becomes space for others to speak, reflect, and carry the philosophy forward.

Through breathtaking cinematography, the film brings to life the spirit of geopoetics—a fusion of geology, language, and creative thought that seeks to reconnect us with the living world. His words echo not only through the landscapes he cherished, but in the voices of today’s poets, artists, and thinkers who continue to be shaped by his legacy.

Quotes

“Beautiful, poised and tranquil, it is a film that evokes the connections between sky land and sea that was first encountered on the Atlantic coast by Kenneth White”.

Jonathan Larwood, Natural England

“Expressing the Earth shines a light on Scottish writer, Kenneth White’s vast literary works and roots. I was left with curiosity to delve further into White’s writing and gently reminded that it is the shared human visceral connection to these Scottish island frontiers and rocky outcrops that inspire poetic leaps of faith across the abyss of time and limitations of language”
